American golf star Max Homa saw red at the PGA Championship on Sunday, angrily launching his club down the fairway after a wayward shot.

Homa was furious after overhitting his approach to the third green, having already been forced to scramble his second shot back into the fairway after hitting his tee shot way left.

The Ryder Cup star eventually had to settle for a double-bogey six, which dropped him further down the leaderboard.

Homa’s new caddie, Bill Harke, chose not to pick the club and left it to his player to do so.

Homa had looked to be in a promising position to win the first major championship of his career on Friday night after a blistering second round that put him into contention.

The 34-year-old has endured a difficult start to the season, at one point missing five consecutive cuts, and recently parted ways with his caddie.

But he showed signs of some form by carding a sparkling seven-under-par 64 that was the low round of the day at Quail Hollow Club on Friday.

At the time it left him three shots back of then-leader Jhonattan Vegas in a share of fifth place.

But Homa’s challenge wilted away on Saturday when he shot a five-over par 76.

To make things worse his playing partner, Scottie Scheffler, rose to the top of the leaderboard with a brilliant 65 and now sits 13 shots ahead of Homa.

Homa parred the remaining four of his opening five holes as he tried to crash the top half of the leaderboard.
