Conor Benn reveals what Chris Eubank Sr told him in hospital after losing epic grudge match with his son

  • Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr both went to hospital after Saturday’s fight
  • Benn has revealed he spoke to Eubank Jr’s dad during his stay in hospital
  • He opened up on the message Eubank Sr gave him as he sat by his bedside

Conor Benn has opened up on how Chris Eubank Sr comforted him in hospital after losing his grudge match with Chris Eubank Jr on Saturday night.

Benn and Eubank Jr engaged in an epic 12-round battle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the latter coming out on top via unanimous decision.

Eubank Jr was spurred on after being reunited with his father on fight night, just days after Eubank Sr had branded him ‘a disgrace’ for slapping Benn with an egg during a bitter build-up to their fight.

Both fighters were taken to hospital after the brutal bout for precautionary checks, and were placed in beds on the same ward, with their famous dads both on hand to support them.

Benn has now revealed that he spoke with Eubank Sr in hospital, and claims he was told he was ‘superior’ to Eubank Jr, despite coming up second-best this weekend.

‘Sr came in to see me, we were chatting,’ Benn told iFL TV: ‘He held my hand. Me and Sr were chatting away, kept telling me I’m the superior fighter.

‘We were just talking, man. He’s a vibe. He’s a vibe. I mean half of it I don’t know, half of it I couldn’t understand what he was trying to say.

‘Then the other half was me in and out of consciousness. Can’t remember much.’

Eubank Sr’s words to Benn align with what he stated in the immediate aftermath of Saturday’s toe-to-toe contest.

He was a fierce critic before the fight that continued the family rivalry after his two bouts with Nigel Benn in the 1990s due to the weight that it was being fought at.

Eubank Sr did not want his son still fighting at the middleweight limit of 160lbs, while he also felt strongly that Benn should be competing at 147lbs.

The 58-year-old repeated that message after watching Eubank Jr emerge victorious, as he hit out at Benn’s team for encouraging their man to move up in weight for a huge payday.

‘The performance? Championship rounds, standing toe-to-toe, the credit I want to give to Conor, I told you he was a superior fighter,’ Eubank Sr told talkSPORT.

‘But he shouldn’t be fighting at 160 or 156. He’s a 147 fighter. What couldn’t he do around the world?

‘He’s been destroyed by the people who are handling him and they have to be brought to account. Do your job, do your job, do your job.’

Benn and Eubank Jr are obligated to rematch each other, and there are plenty of fans who would be happy to see them put on another show after Saturday night.

However, Benn could still follow Eubank Sr’s advice and drop back down to welterweight in a bid to become world champion in that division.
