- Queensland coach’s appearance hot topic on Today
- Former NRL star also works as commentator for Nine
Today host Karl Stefanovic has aired his strange theory that footy icon Billy Slater is sporting a new look after having his lips plumped up with fillers.
The Channel Nine star raised Slater’s appearance on Wednesday’s show, asking sport presenter Danika Mason, ‘Has Billy Slater had his lips done? They look plump and delicious,’ after the NRL great made an appearance.
‘Nah, he’s had them done, he’s got bee-stung lips.’
‘Look at him pouting,’ co-hose Sara Abo said as footage of Slater was played.
‘He could have put on that lip gloss that kind of plumps your lips … they’re a bit shiny as well.’
Stefanovic was still suffering from what Mason called ‘lip envy’ an hour later, telling viewers, ‘I didn’t know that you can get stuff on your lips that’s like a gloss that plumps up your lips.

After calling Slater’s lips ‘plump and delicious’, Stefanovic tried a lip gloss that his co-hosts recommended in order to give himself the same look
‘How long has this been going on for?’
‘It feels like an allergic reaction [when you wear it],’ Mason explained.
‘What do you do it for?’ Stefanovic asked.
‘To make your lips luscious, like Billy Slater,’ Abo replied.
‘Well, it’s working,’ Stefanovic said, before actually trying some of the gloss later on in the program and telling his colleagues, ‘That’s starting to burn now.’
Mason texted Slater for comment about his alleged trout pout and read out the reply on air.
‘He said, “Tell Karl I’m just a natural, far north Queensland kid doing his best”.’
It’s not the first time Stefanovic has been stunned by Slater’s looks.

Slater (pictured at the Dolphins vs Panthers match earlier this month) sent Today sports presenter Danika Mason a text revealing that his lips are ‘natural’
He and then-co-hosts Sylvia Jeffreys and Deborah Knight were full of admiration for the ex-Melbourne Storm star as they showed footage of him warming up with no top on before a match.
I mean, just delicious, isn’t he?’ Stefanovic said.
Slater is currently preparing for the first Origin clash against NSW, which will be held at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on May 28.
He’ll be desperate for the Maroons to get revenge after they lost a thrilling series to NSW last year, suffering a rare defeat on home soil in the deciding third rubber.
Slater already has a few dilemmas, including how to replace injured fullback Reece Walsh, who is out for up to six weeks after suffering a knee injury in the Broncos’ loss to the Warriors last Saturday.
Newcastle star Kalyn Ponga would usually be the obvious option, but his form with the struggling Knights has been below par so far this season.
