Jarryd Hayne’s dwindling financial fortunes have taken another hit, with the former NRL star selling off one of his remaining properties as he attempts to return to rugby league.

The two-time Dally M winner’s property portfolio was once worth more than $5million, including terrace houses and cottages in trendy Sydney suburbs.

Now the 37-year-old has sold off a two-bedroom, 16th-floor apartment in Parramatta for $690,000, after originally paying $600,000.

Hayne purchased the apartment off the plan in 2013 when he was playing for the Eels and briefly listed it on the market in 2021.

The sale means that Hayne’s property portfolio has reportedly been reduced to a cottage in Umina Beach that his mother lives in.

The footy star was at one stage earning north of $1million a year, both with the Parramatta Eels and Gold Coast Titans, making him the highest-paid player in the NRL.

He invested that salary into properties, but as his career declined and legal bills added up he offloaded almost all of them.

To make matters worse, Hayne was reportedly conned out of $780,000 in Bitcoin by one of his fellow inmates at Cooma Correctional Centre.

Hayne was first accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the night of the 2018 NRL Grand Final at her Newcastle home.

His first trial ended in a hung jury, but he was convicted in his second trial and sentenced to five years and nine months in prison in May 2021.

Hayne’s conviction was quashed on appeal in February 2022, and after a third trial in 2023, he was again convicted and sentenced to four years and nine months.

On June 12, 2024, the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal overturned his convictions due to trial errors, granting him bail under strict conditions.

Hayne has set himself the goal of playing Test football for Fiji at the end of the season following a seven-year hiatus from rugby league.

He is playing for the Wentworthville Magpies in the Ron Massey Cup, a semi-professional competition that feeds into the NSW Cup.

Hayne is focused again on rugby league and says that playing in the NRL again isn’t his goal right now.

‘The fairytale would be that. But I’m realistic as well. That [comeback] is long, long odds. It’s also not my focus,’ he recently told the Sydney Morning Herald.

‘For me, I want to get back and play in front of my kids.

‘I also want to do what I can to play Test football for Fiji at the end of the year. They’re due to play against Papua New Guinea and the Cook Islands. That’s the aim.

‘[Coach] Wise [Kativerata] called me last year and asked if I wanted to play. I told him I’m not in shape, and said, “I wish you had told me earlier because I would have played local footy” I’ve been out of the game for so long.

‘I try to explain to people it’s about the contact. When you’re playing regularly, and you’re hit on a regular basis, your body gets [used to it]. But when you’ve been out of it for a while, it doesn’t matter how long you played beforehand, it takes a long time for your body to adjust to that impact.

‘I want to build up to playing for Fiji. But it starts with getting my body right, and having a good year with Wenty.’
