  • Spurs stars were spotted wearing mismatched socks in training on Wednesday
  • Tottenham are set to take on AZ Alkmaar in a crucial Europa League showdown
  • LISTEN NOW: It’s All Kicking Off! With the Premier League likely securing five Champions League spots, are we rewarding mediocrity?

The heartwarming reason Tottenham stars wore odds socks during their training session ahead of their crucial match against AZ Alkmaar was finally revealed.

Ange Postecoglou’s men are set to take on the Dutch side after they endured a 1-0 defeat in front of away stands last week.

Tottenham were outperformed throughout the entire game, which concluded with Lucas Bergvall’s comical goal in the 18th minute following a corner kick taken by midfielder Teun Koopmeiners.

The Europa League remains the only competition Spurs can fight for after they were knocked out of both the FA Cup and Carabao cup following two devastating losses by Aston Villa and Liverpool respectively.

While many seemed to believe the north London club had released a new kit in the final months of their season, it has now been revealed that there was a touching reason behind it.

The motive for Spurs players’ mismatched socks was to raise awareness for World Down Syndrome Day on March 21.

The awareness week runs from Monday March 16 until Sunday March 22 while the initiative has been observed globally since 2012.

On Wednesday, the club released a statement which read: ‘We are proudly supporting Down Syndrome Awareness Week, with our men’s and women’s first team players today training in colourful mismatched socks.

‘Wearing mismatched socks is the perfect way to show that no two people are the same – regardless of the number of chromosomes they have.

‘People across the world are encouraged to take part by ‘rocking their socks’ on Thursday March 21, World Down Syndrome Day.

‘Our players wore a range of colourful mismatched socks, provided by Nike, at a session attended by young people with Down syndrome and their families.’

It is understood that the presence of Kevin Danso and Richarlison at the Tottenham Hostpur Stadium on Thursday remains unlikely as neither player was spotted at the training session.

‘Kevin got a hamstring injury in the last game so he’s out,’ said Postecoglou.

‘We’ve got the international break which helps us and Kevin looks after himself, he’s a pretty good athlete, so we’ll give him every chance to get back. And he’ll be pushing for sure.’

The Europa League triumph also remains realistically the only opportunity for Spurs to enter European football next year.

Tottenham currently sit in 13th place in the Premier League standings, with just 34 points in 28 games.

Postecoglou’s men lost three potential points against Bournemouth on Sunday, yet managed to secure a draw after the score was initially 0-2 in the 65th minute.

Pape Matar Sarr shortened the lead with his stunning long-range strike in the 67th minute, while Son Hueng-min obtained a draw in the last stages of the game.

On a more positive note, Postecoglou has confirmed that both centre backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are set to start the game on Thursday.

‘They got through the game well. Romero no issues and great to get Micky back out there and he felt good, so both available,’ he said.
