Former Pittsburgh Steelers guard Craig Wolfley passed away on Monday at age 66.

Wolfley played for the Steelers for 10 seasons and became a well-loved TV and radio personality after hanging his cleats up.

He was the Steelers’ radio color analyst since 2022 after replacing his best friend Tunch Ilkin, who passed away in September 2021. Before joining the commentary team, Wolfley served as their sideline reporter and worked on their radio broadcasts.

In a statement released on the Monday, Steelers owner Art Rooney wrote ‘We are deeply saddened by the passing of Craig Wolfley, a beloved member of the Pittsburgh Steelers family.’

‘Craig was an outstanding player who brought both toughness and heart to the field during his 10 seasons with the Steelers. As an offensive lineman, his grit and dedication were essential to our success, contributing to the solid foundation of the Steelers’ offensive line in the 1980s and 1990s.

‘His work ethic and commitment to excellence were felt both in the locker room and on the field, and his leadership was always evident.’

‘Following his retirement from playing, Craig seamlessly transitioned into a broadcaster, providing insightful commentary and analysis as part of the Steelers Radio Network,’ Rooney added.

‘His passionate voice and deep understanding of the game made him a trusted figure for Steelers fans, and his humor, warmth, and enthusiasm left a lasting impact on our community.’

‘On behalf of the entire Steelers organization, we offer our deepest condolences to Craig’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.’

Pittsburgh selected Wolfley out of Syracuse in the fifth round of the 1980 NFL Draft. After ten years in black and yellow, he wrapped up his playing career with two seasons in Minnesota.

Apart from his NFL career, Wolfley was involved in weight lifting and boxing. In 1981, he placed fifth in the World’s Strongest Man competition.

In 2022, he lost a four-round boxing match to former boxer and professional wrestler, Eric Esch, also known as Butterbean.
