City looked poised to arrive in the Spanish capital next week with a one-goal lead after Erling Haaland successfully converted his 80th-minute penalty following a foul on Phil Foden.
The strike, the Norwegian’s second of the game, came after Kylian Mbappe had restored parity for Real Madrid in fortuitous fashion.
The hosts then conceded twice in the final six minutes at the Etihad, to complete yet another Champions League capitulation.
Despite the result, there was another major talking point on social media after full-time as one fan was seen getting a haircut in the Etihad stands.
Footage of the bizarre incident emerged on X on Tuesday night, with the fan seated in the home stand while a friend of his trimmed his hair with some clippers.

Fans on social media were left stunned by the bizarre clip and questioned how the supporter was able to sneak hair clippers into the Etihad stadium.
One user wrote: ‘Game’s gone mate get yourself to local lower league games and start over you won’t regret it’.
‘I would be embarrassed if I had to sit near that’, another said.
The fan’s haircut wasn’t the only major talking point on the night, with City fans unveiling a banner mocking Vinicius Jr for his Ballon d’Or snub.
City fans unveiled a giant tifo before their dramatic 3-2 Champions League play-off first leg defeat, depicting Rodri collecting the Ballon d’Or award, with a message reading: ‘Stop crying your heart out.’
The words were aimed at Vinicius after Real infamously boycotted the event in protest at the Brazilian finishing second behind Rodri – but the stunt in the stands backfired spectacularly.
Vinicius helped set-up Madrid’s winning goal at the Etihad – lifting the ball over Ederson before Jude Bellingham poked home – and picked up the Player of the Match award.
Meanwhile, Vinicius claimed that the banner helped inspire his performance on the night – where he picked up the Player of the Match award.

‘Whenever rival fans do things, it gives me more strength to play a great game.’
Ex-City academy graduate Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham struck in the final minutes to turn the tie on its head after Erling Haaland’s double.
City are now major underdogs heading to the Bernabeu next week and face European elimination, with their manager insisting the Premier League champions will not be competitive for the remainder of the season if they do not eradicate late errors.
