Views sought on an integrated plan for drainage and wastewater management in Derry~Londonderry.
The Department for Infrastructure has launched a public consultation on a strategic drainage infrastructure plan for Derry~Londonderry.
The draft Living With Water in Derry~Londonderry Plan sets out proposals for a strategic long-term approach to drainage and wastewater management in the city and surrounding area. It proposes a collaborative multi-agency approach by encouraging partners to work together to develop the right solutions in the right places promoting a combination of traditional hard engineered measures alongside natural solutions such as using open green spaces to naturally absorb and store surface water.
The approach aims to
- protect against flooding by managing the flow of water through a catchment from source to sea
- enhance the environment through effective wastewater management and the provision of enhanced “blue/green” spaces to benefit local communities
- grow the economy by providing the necessary capacity in our drainage and wastewater management systems to facilitate new development projects, including house building
The drainage of surface water and the effective treatment and management of sewage are essential for good public health, economic growth, and a healthy, natural environment. They are also needed to support the development of homes, schools, hospitals, commercial businesses, and industry. Drainage issues are complex and no one organisation can tackle them alone. The plan takes an integrated approach to address the inter-related issues, while aiming to provide multiple benefits to the community.
