Manchester United left it late to heap yet more misery on their rivals in a dramatic derby showdown on Sunday.
The two most dominant sides of the Premier League era entered the fixture both hoping that a derby day victory could serve as a spark to reignite their respective campaigns.
After an opening period largely lacking in quality, it was City who drew first blood at the Etihad as United were once again punished from an opposition set piece.
United had opportunities throughout the second half but looked set to be going home empty handed before turning the game on its head in the closing stages.
Bruno Fernandes converted from the penalty spot to draw level before Amad Diallo found a winner just seconds later to send the travelling supporters into pandemonium.
Mail Sport’s JACK GAUGHAN and CHRIS WHEELER were in attendance to provide their expert analysis on both teams in the Manchester derby.
Man United left it late to secure a dramatic comeback in the Manchester derby on Sunday
Amad Diallo netted a winner just seconds after Bruno Fernandes had levelled from the penalty spot
The result marks the latest blow for Pep Guardiola’s side who have now won just one of their last 11 games
MAN CITY (4-1-4-1)
Ederson – 5
Left high and dry by Matheus Nunes for the penalty. Horrible moment when rushing out for Amad Diallo’s winner.
Kyle Walker – 5
Absolutely pathetic playacting in trying to get Rasmus Hojlund sent off. Didn’t use the ball nearly as well as he might.
Ruben Dias – 6.5
Exuded a calmness at the back, dealing with Hojlund nicely. He must think if only the rest of City’s unit could perform as such.
Josko Gvardiol – 6
Top header for the opener and generally looked far more composed – until not tracking Diallo in the very final moments.
Kyle Walker failed in his attempt to have Rasmus Hojlund sent off following a first-half incident
City’s defensive vulnerabilities were embodied by makeshift left back Matheus Nunes
Matheus Nunes – 4.5
Awful for the United penalty – a dodgy back pass to Ederson and then a daft tackle in a rash attempt to rectify it.
Ilkay Gundogan – 6
Much better in tight spaces, making sure City retained possession. Did get exposed wrong side because of his pace.
Bernardo Silva – 7
City’s brightest spark in the first half, and the direct dribbling to carry City forward continued in the second.
Kevin De Bruyne – 5.5
One of those days where nothing came off in his role as creative enforcer. Those displays come with the territory.
Phil Foden – 6
More involved and present in City’s build up play. Still doesn’t seem fully fit and will want to make match-defining contributions.
Bernardo Silva was key to all of their host’s attacking opportunities during the first half
Another disappointing performance for Kevin De Bruyne, who failed to leave his stamp on the game
After being key for City last season, Phil Foden is still struggling to find his best form
Erling Haaland suffered from a lack of service but largely did was what asked of him at the Etihad
Jeremy Doku – 6
Seemed confused at what Pep Guardiola was asking of him. Doku was floating inside to minimal effect.
Erling Haaland – 6
Quite a lonely existence up there for him. Drew defenders though, won his headers, brought players into the game.
Subs
Mateo Kovacic (for De Bruyne, 68) – 6
Jack Grealish (for Doku, 77)
Savinho (for Gundogan, 89)
Manager: Pep Guardiola
The big call to play Nunes at left back ultimately didn’t pay off – but not for the reason Guardiola might have anticipated.
MAN UNITED (3-4-3)
Andre Onana- 6.5
Under the microscope after errors in his last two games, but solid on the whole and came up with a smart save from Foden before half-time to keep United in it.
Matthijs de Ligt – 6.5
Shifted to the right side of Amorim’s back-three and rarely put a foot wrong. Made way for Yoro before United’s late comeback stunned City.
Harry Maguire – 7
Given the job of marking Haaland and managed to keep the Norwegian quiet. People say he and De Ligt are too similar to play together but they were relatively sound defensively.
Under increased scrutiny, Andre Onana was solid between the sticks for the visitors
Harry Maguire was tasked with keeping Erling Haaland out of the game and largely succeeded
Lisandro Martinez showcased both aspects of his game, with his pass finding Diallo for the winner
Lisandro Martinez – 7
A gritty, hard-fought derby was right up his street. Produced a great block on Haaland’s shot towards the end and then picked out Diallo with a wonderful pass for the winner.
Noussair Mazraoui – 6
Switched to wing-back and had his hands full against Doku but coped well on the whole. Didn’t get forward nearly as much as he – or Amorim – would like.
Bruno Fernandes – 6.5
Started in a deeper role and then pushed higher after Mainoo replaced Mount early on. Competitive rather than creative and also missed a one-on-one chance, but stepped up when it mattered to equalise from the spot.
Manuel Ugarte – 6.5
The ugly, scrappy nature of this game seemed to suit the combative Uruguayan. Relished the physical aspect and proved it by conceding more than his fair share of fouls.
Diogo Dalot – 6
Did a good job of keeping compatriot Bernardo under wraps on his weaker left side, but he was the man beaten by Gvardiol for the City goal as United conceded from a corner for the fourth time in three league games.
Amad Diallo – 8
He’s a player reborn under Amorim. United’s most potent attacking threat again long before he won the late penalty and then conjured up a fantastic winner.
After missing a golden chance, Bruno Fernandes redeemed himself to level from 12 yards
Amad Diallo was inspired as United were able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat
Mason Mount’s chance to demonstrate his worth was cruelly cut short due to injury
Rasmus Hojlund – 6.5
Led the attack with a physical presence after his Europa League double in Plzen in midweek but best contribution was setting up a chance for Fernandes. Silly to thrust his head into Kyle Walker’s in the first half, but the City man made a meal of it too.
Mason Mount – 5.5
Replaced Rashford on the left and will have seen this as a big opportunity but looked devastated to have to go off inside a quarter of an hour and had to be consoled by teammates after picking up yet another injury.
Subs:
Lindelof (for Diallo 90+1)
Zirkzee (for Hojlund 78) – 6
Yoro (for De Ligt 79) – 6
Antony (for Mazraoui 78) – 6.5
Mainoo (for Mount 14) – 6.5
Manager: Ruben Amorim
Knew he couldn’t play against Guardiola like he did with Sporting Lisbon last month, so tried to do a job on City and it worked. Conceded from another set-piece but snatched victory in sensational style.
