Angry residents of a street where new double yellow lines have been painted said parking “harmony” has descended into a “nightmare” – with the lines only adding to the congestion.
The markings were placed on Major Street in Milnrow by Rochdale Council on 7 November in response to complaints about driveways being blocked by parked cars.
But residents including Michelle Kight said the new lines have instead made a “bad but manageable” situation worse, with spaces now even more limited.
A council spokesman said the concerns would be discussed by councillors.
The lines were painted by council workers in the space of an hour, causing residents to gather on the street to “wonder what had happened”, resident Denise Murphy said.
“It’s only been a week but already it’s a nightmare”, she told the Local Democracy Reporting Service, adding there was “harmony on the street before”.
“I’d only been out to Aldi for 45 minutes and when I was back the lines were done. I was like oh my god.
“Surely someone at the council has some common sense. Nobody has put any thought into that whatsoever.”
Those in the area fear the new markings could cause problems if large vehicles like ambulances or bin wagons try to pass through.
A resident petition, which has already gathered more than 100 signatures, has urged the council to reconsider the lines, which go 47m (51 yards) up the road.
Campaigners feel the markings go too far and should have been drawn just 10m into the street, while others said they were not aware of a consultation on the new lines.
The matter was raised at the Pennines Township Committee, where Rochdale councillors agreed to look into the matter and cost up an alternative to provide more parking on the street.
The council spokesman said the new lines had been advertised on lamp posts and n the press for three weeks and no objections were received”.
“We’re aware that concerns have now been raised at Pennines Township Committee, so we will be discussing these concerns with local councillors.”
